    FAQ

    Frequently asked questions

    Why choose Portuguese granite setts?
Portuguese granite is renowned for its durability, weather resistance (frost, heat, rain), and natural aesthetics. It is extracted from local quarries, ensuring consistent quality and a wide variety of colours (grey, pink, blue, yellow, mixed, etc.).
What are the advantages of Portuguese granite over other materials?
    • Longevity: Resists wear and maintains its appearance for decades.
    • Low maintenance: Easy to clean, resistant to stains and moss.
    • Ecological: Natural, recyclable, local material (low carbon footprint when imported within Europe).
    • Slip-resistant: Ideal for outdoor spaces (sidewalks, terraces, driveways).
How to recognise quality granite setts?
    • Density: Quality granite is dense and heavy, with no visible pores. (Upper layers, generally yellow, are more porous than deeper grey layers, which are older, denser, and have better frost resistance.)
    • Uniform colour: Few shade variations within the same batch, unless opting for a mixed colour (intermediate layer), which gives a warm rustic look.
    • Finishes: Clean edges, smooth or textured surface depending on use (slip-resistant if needed).
    • Cut: The regularity of the cut determines the square meterage per tonne. For example, if you choose 9x11x5 setts and the average thickness exceeds 5 cm, you won't get the desired 9.5 m² per tonne.
What are the key steps for laying granite setts?
    1. Ground preparation: Excavation, compaction and laying a gravel or sand layer for drainage.
    2. Bedding layer: Layer of sand or weak mortar (5 cm thick) to stabilise the setts.
    3. Laying setts: Alignment and tapping with a rubber mallet.
    4. Joint filling: Filling joints with sand or strong mortar depending on the type of laying (dry or sealed).
    5. Final compaction: Use of a vibrating plate to stabilise the whole.
Should I choose sealed laying or sand-bed laying?
    • Sealed laying (mortar): Recommended for high-traffic areas (roads, car parks), slopes, or 5 cm thick setts. More stable and durable, but less permeable.
    • Sand-bed laying: Ideal for pedestrian paths, terraces or gardens. Permeable, easy to repair, but less resistant to heavy loads. Only for setts thicker than 5 cm.
What type of joint should I use?
    • Sand: For sand-bed laying, allows good permeability.
    • Mortar: For sealed laying, ensures better stability.
    • Resin: For an aesthetic finish and increased resistance (higher cost).
    How to avoid drainage problems?
    • Provide a minimum slope of 2% to drain water.
    • Use a draining bedding layer (gravel + sand).
    • Avoid mortar joints if permeability is crucial.
    How to maintain granite setts?
    • Regular cleaning: Sweeping and washing with water (avoid acidic products).
    • Weeding: Use natural weed killer or a pressure washer for joints.
    • Protection: Apply a water repellent (optional) to limit stains and water absorption, although not essential, as it makes high-pressure cleaning harder over time.
Can granite setts stain or wear over time?
Granite is stain-resistant, but some liquids (oil, wine) can leave marks if not cleaned quickly. Wear is minimal thanks to the hardness of the material, but a textured surface may smooth over time.
How to repair a damaged or loosened sett?
    1. Remove the damaged sett and clean the area.
    2. Replace with a new sett using mortar or sand according to the original laying.
    3. Re-joint and compact.
What are the delivery times from Portugal?
    • Standard times: 2 to 3 weeks depending on quantity and location.
    • Stock: Mixed and grey 9/11/5 setts (reduced times of 1-2 weeks).
Are there certifications for Portuguese granite?
    • Standard EN 1341-1343: For natural stone setts.
    • CE marking: Mandatory for marketing in Europe.
    • Environmental certifications: ISO 14001 labels.
Which granite setts for a terrace?
For a terrace, choose granite setts suited to pedestrian outdoor use. The choice of finish depends on the look you want: cleaved offers a raw appearance, while flamed, bush-hammered or shot-blasted gives a slip-resistant, durable surface.
Which granite setts for a path?
For a path, cleaved granite setts are a traditional, durable choice, particularly suited to outdoor landscaping and pedestrian traffic. For a driveway, the format, thickness and laying method must be adapted to vehicle use.
Which thickness should you choose for granite setts?
The thickness of the granite sett depends on its use and the type of laying. It must be matched to the load: pedestrian traffic, path or roadway. To choose the right format and thickness, we recommend letting us know about your project so we can guide you towards the most suitable granite sett.
What is the price per m² of granite setts, laid or not?
Our Portuguese granite setts are sold from 8.95€/m² excl. VAT (excl. VAT and delivery), direct from the quarry. This price covers supply only. The laid price per m² depends on the installer, the region and the base: ask a local professional for a laying quote.
Where to buy granite setts: direct from the quarry or from DIY stores?

Leroy Merlin, Castorama, Brico Dépôt and Point P sell granite setts at prices per m² often higher than buying direct. Buying direct from the quarry removes the intermediaries: our Portuguese granite setts start at 8.95€/m² excl. VAT, CE standard.

Regularity makes the difference: a quarry sett is sorted and calibrated (dimensions, cut, shade) for a homogeneous paving. Delivery available across Europe, with 1 to 2 week lead times on stocked formats.

What thickness and what laying method for a driveway in granite setts?
For a driveway, allow setts at least 5 cm thick (our 9x11x5 is suitable), laid on a mortar bed or a compacted draining foundation. Mortar-bed laying is recommended to support vehicles and light trucks up to 12 tonnes.
Can granite setts be laid on a concrete slab or a screed?
Yes. On a concrete slab, lay the setts in mortar (sealed laying) with a 10 cm allowance: 5 cm of mortar and 5 cm of sett. On a screed, laying with adhesive mortar is possible indoors and outdoors.
How to make grass joints between granite setts?
For a grass joint, allow 10 cm thick setts, space the setts 3 to 5 cm apart and fill the gaps with topsoil mixed with sand before sowing or laying the grass. Granite setts allow an attractive, draining grass parking area.
    What is peacock tail laying?
The peacock tail is a traditional fan-shaped paving pattern, often used for a decorative look in the centre of a courtyard or square. It requires careful cutting of the setts and the skill of an experienced paver.
Granite setts 10x10 or 9x11: what's the difference?
The 10x10 and the 9x11 are the same setts because cleaved setts are irregular on all faces with a tolerance of ±1 cm. The 10x10x10 is a cubical, thicker sett, often reserved for roadways, heavy traffic or, at home, for a draining ground. Our 9x11x5 is a thinner rectangular sett, suited to driveways, courtyards and terraces, and far more economical per m². For a private driveway, 9x11x5 laid on mortar is generally suitable.
New or reclaimed granite setts: which should you choose?
We exclusively sell new granite setts from our quarries in Northern Portugal: consistent quality, regular dimensions and CE standard. Reclaimed old setts are more irregular, require sorting and cutting, with an often higher installation cost.
